Joseph was born about 1784 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of unknown parents.

His wife was Mary Makepeace, whom he married on 29 NOV 1812 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their eleven known children were Sarah (<1813->1841), un (<1815-?), John (<1815-1884), Esau (<1817-<1832), Esther (<1819-?), Abi (<1820-<1830), Joseph (<1824-?), Jesse (c1825-c1925), Abi (c1830->1841), Esau (1832-?) and Sarah (1841->1841).
