James was born on 11 DEC 1849 in Hulme, Manchester, the son of John Brewerton and Agnes Bateson.[Note 1]

His wife was Hannah Shallaker, who he married on 17 SEP 1871 in Manchester Cathedral. Their six known children were William G. (c1873-?), Robert (c1875->1881), Thomas F. (1876-?), James H. (c1880-?), Elizabeth E. (1881-?) and Harry (c1891-?).
