James was born before 3 NOV 1861 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of Benjamin Butcher and Ann Maria Dillow.[Note 1]

His wife was Frances Green, whom he married in ABT NOV 1879 in Leigh registration district, Lancashire. Their three known children were Eliza Jane (c1880-?), Betsy (c1883-?) and Sarah Ann (c1887-?).
