TINGEWICK.

SUICIDE AND INQUEST.—An inquest was held at the above village on Monday evening the 13th inst., before G.H. DeAth, District Coroner, on view of the body of Mr. Thomas Berry, pig dealer, &c., an old and highly respected inhabitant, who died early on the same morning from the effects of injuries inflicted on himself on two previous occasions. On the 29th of January deceased was discovered by his wife with his throat cut very severely. Medical aid was procured, and the injury attended to, and he appeared to be in a fair way for recovery. On the morning of the 2nd of March, he again made an attempt on his life by cutting himself all across the abdomen, and inflicting a wound from whence the bowels protruded. Medical aid was again procured, and the injury attended to, but a fatal termination resulted on Monday last, much to the regret of all whom deceased was so well-known. From the evidence adduced at the inquest, deceased had been noticed to be queer in his mind, almost delirious at times, but was never known to say anything likely to cause suspicion that he would make any attempt on his life; he would at times fancy he was away from home, and that people wanted to rob him or kill him. After the first attempt, Dr. Linnoll gave strict orders that deceased should be constantly watched and suggested that a man should always be kept near him. Deceased’s wife did not seem to see the need of having a man in the house, but had a woman about pretty constantly. Deceased appeared to have evaded their vigilance, procuring a razor in the first, and a carving knife in the second instance, with the result named above. The Jury, of which Mr. W. Smart was foreman, returned a verdict to the effect that “Deceased died from the effect of wounds inflicted while temporarily insane,” and expressed their regret that deceased was not more closely guarded. Deceased was 70 years of age.
