Alfred was born on 3 JUL 1857 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, the son of Thomas Cleaver and Caroline Whybrow.[Notes 2, 3]

His wife was Elizabeth Gower, whom he married in ABT MAY 1883 in Leighton Buzzard registration district, Bedfordshire. Their five known children were Frederick (1885-1917), Fanny (1889-?), Annie (c1891-?), William (1897->1918) and John (1900-?).
