James was born before 21 JUN 1801 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of Benjamin Butcher and Anne Elkington.

He died before 12 MAR 1876. The place is not known.

His wife was Sarah Pritchett, who he married on 17 JUN 1822 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their ten known children were John (<1823->1841), Hannah (<1825->1858), Anne (<1827->1841), Benjamin (<1830-?), Thomas (1832-<1832), Mary (1833-<1842), Elizabeth (1837-<1837), Sarah (1839-?), Eliza (<1841-?) and James (<1844-<1847).
