Ruth was born about 1865 in Water Eaton, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of unknown parents.[Note 1]

Her husband was Benjamin Coles, whom she married in ABT AUG 1888 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their eight known children were Thomas James (c1889-?), Edward William (c1890-1963), Edward W. (1891-<1901), Archie (1892-1916), Hilda (1894-1903), John (1895-?), George (1898-1953) and Emily (c1900-?).
