Frederick was born about 1843 in Attenborogh Norfolk, the son of unknown parents.[Note 1]

His wife was Elizabeth Marshall, whom he married in ABT MAY 1878 in Pancras registration district, London. Their ten known children were Charles Eli Monk OR (c1870-?), Jane Monk OR (c1875-?), Harriet Monk OR (c1877-?), Ernest (c1879-?), Elizabeth (c1880-?), Ellen (c1880-?), Frederick (c1885-?), Rose (c1886-?), Birta (c1887-?) and Maria (c1889-?).
