Benjamin was born on 3 DEC 1830 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of Benjamin Butcher and Elizabeth Gibbard.[Note 1]

His wife was Elizabeth Barnes, whom he married on 15 MAR 1852 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their eleven known children were Rebecca (<1852-?), Lucretia (<1854-1859), Benjamin (<1856-?), Elizabeth Anne (<1858-?), Joseph (1860-?), Hannah Mary (<1862-?), Sarah (<1863-?), Jacob (c1864-?), Emmanuel (c1866-?), George (<1869-?) and Stephen (<1871-?).
