Joseph was born about 1850 in Finmere, Oxfordshire, the son of Edward Barnes and Silence Byles.

His wife was Mary Ann [un], who he married in BEF APR 1881. The place has not been found. Their thirteen known children were Emily (c1881-?), Thomas George (1882-?), Robert (1884-?), Jane (<1886-?), Elizabeth (<1889-?), Philip (c1892-1893), Joseph (<1894-?), Frederick John (1895-1896), Florence Ellen (1896-?), Rose (<1899-?), Alice (1900-1900), Ernie (c1904-?) and Lily (c1905-1966).
