George was born before 13 SEP 1840 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of Daniel Coles and Elizabeth Gibbard.[Note 1]

His wife was Hannah Hitchcock, whom he married on 31 MAY 1863 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their ten known children were Sarah Ann (<1864-?), Catherine Elizabeth (c1866-?), John (c1868-?), Fanny (<1870-<1875), Eliza (c1872-?), Thomas George (c1875-?), Fanny Louisa (1878-?), Ellen M. (1880-?), Nellie (c1881-?) and Frederick V. (c1883-?).
