James was born before 23 MAR 1788, the son of Thomas Braggins and Mary Thorpe. The place is not known.[Note 2]

His wife was Maria un, whom he married in BEF 1812. The place has not been found. Their ten known children were Ann (1812-?), Leah (1815-?), John (1816-1894), Mary (1817-?), Martha (1819-?), Hannah (<1822-?), William (<1824-<1851), Elizabeth (<1826-<1833), Rachel (<1829-?) and Joseph (<1831-<1832).
