James was born about 1841 in Duns Tew, Oxfordshire, the son of unknown parents.[Note 1]

His wife was Fanny un, whom he married in BEF 1864. The place has not been found. Their three known children were Sarah Mary Ann (c1864-?), Emma (c1872-?) and Mary Sophia (c1875-?).
