Alfred was born about 1872 in Quainton, Buckinghamshire, the son of Albert Edwin Roads and Matilda Somerset.[Note 1]

His wife was Fanny Jane Lucas, whom he married on 25 DEC 1894 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire. Their six known children were Thomas William Goddard (<1896-?), Cecil Charles (1897-1897), Alfred Charles (c1900-?), Cecil Albert (c1901-?), Jessie Primrose (c1904-?) and Dora Elizabeth (c1906-?).
