FUNERAL OF THE REV. JOHN COKER

The funeral of the Rev. John Coker took place at Tingewick on Saturday afternoon, amidst the deepest tokens of regret and reverence. The body was taken to the Parish Church, where the first portion of the burial service was conducted, and the hymns “Peace, perfect peace,” and “For ever with the Lord,” were sung, and the “Nunc Dimitts” chanted. On retiring from the sacred edifice the coffin, covered with a rich violet silk pall, was placed upon the wheel-bier and taken through the village to the Cemetery, where the body was deposited in a beautifully-lined grave of moss and bloom. The officiating clergy were the Rev. C.J. Clarke (of Fringford), Rev. W.J.B. Hancock (curate), Rev. E. Johnstone (Maids Moreton), and the Rev. T.H. Cookies (formerly of Newton Purcell, and now of Banbury). The mourners included: …. W. Jonathan Price (46 years head gardener at the Rectory), Mr.. J.T. Harland (19 years farm steward) … All the establishments in the village were closed for two hours, and as the lengthy cortege, which included the school children and practically all the inhabitants, passed through the street it was a very mournful one. It was requested that no flowers should be sent but several floral emblems were received … The coffin … bore the inscription at the foot of the full-length brass cross: “John Coker, Rector of Tingewick, died 31st July, 1901, aged 80 years.” …
