Matthew was born about 1864 in Aynho, Northamptonshire or Shalstone, Buckinghamshire, the son of Matthew Borton and Emma Charlotte un.[Note 1]

His wife was Helen Bygrave, whom he married in ABT FEB 1887 in Brackley registration district, Northamptonshire. Their seven known children were Elsie F. (c1888->1901), Laura C. (c1889->1901), Frederick W. (c1891->1901), Frank (c1892-?), Walter Robert (<1896-?), Bertha Mary (<1898-?) and Amy May (c1901-?).
