William was born about 1837 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of unknown parents.[Note 1]

His wife was Mary Ann Hall, whom he married in ABT AUG 1860 in Buckingham registration district, Buckinghamshire. Their nine known children were William J. (c1861-?), Kate (<1863-?), Walter (c1866-?), Sarah A. (c1868-?), Elizabeth (c1870-?), Ellinor (c1874-?), Edith (c1877-?), George (c1879-?) and Bertha (c1882-?).
