Matthew was born about 1833 in Aynho, Northamptonshire, the son of unknown parents.

His wife was Emma Charlotte [un], who he married in ABT AUG 1856 in St. George Hanover Square, London. Their nine known children were Mary Emma (c1860-?), Sarah Ann (c1862-?), Eliza (c1863-?), Matthew William (c1864-?), Emily (c1866-?), George Stephen (c1869-?), Aubrey Frederic (<1871-?), Matthew (<1874-?) and Herbert Thomas (c1876-?).
