James was born before 7 AUG 1853 in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, the son of John Butcher and Elizabeth un.[Note 1]

His wife was Harriet Hunter, whom he married in ABT MAY 1874 in Malton registration district, Yorkshire. Their eight known children were Annie E. (c1875-?), Jane Ellen (c1877-?), William (c1879-?), John (c1880-?), Anthony (c1883-?), Herbert (c1886-?), Albert James (c1889-?) and Mary Alice (c1893-?).
