John Short's ancestor, (16) also John Short, is believed to have been born in Tingewick around 1803. He was convicted of burglary in Middlesex in April 1828 (details on John's website) and transported in July 1829. He arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on the 'Waterloo' and was assigned to George Townshend, Trevallyn, New South Wales. In 1837 he was No.23110 in the General Return of Convicts. In 1843 he applied for - and was granted - permission to marry [(17) Mary Hipwell / Rawlings from Ireland] . In 1845 he was granted a Conditional Pardon.
