Ellen was born about 1848 in London, the daughter of Ely Kitson and Amy Everett.[Note 1]

Her husband was John Briggs Brown. They were married, but the date and place have not been found. Their eight known children were John Ely (c1871-?), Thomas K. (c1875-?), Arthur B. (c1877-?), Walter E. (c1879-?), Ellen K. (c1882-?), Frank H. (c1884-?), Sarah A. (c1887-?) and James S. (c1889-?).
